From Novice to Certified: Mastering the Art of Inflatable Mechanic ADM-I Training

Are you ready to take your party rental business to new heights? If you’re planning to set up inflatables in Ontario on public property, certification from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a must. And to achieve this certification, you’ll need to employ or contract an Inflatable Mechanic (ADM-I) to handle the setup and takedown of your bouncy castles. But beware! Becoming TSSA certified can come at a hefty cost. Luckily, after my own experience in the industry, I can share some insider knowledge to help you on this journey.

The first step towards becoming an Inflatable Mechanic is finding a seasoned ADM-I mechanic who is willing to train you. To obtain certification, you’ll need a minimum of 240 hours of training (equivalent to approximately 6 months of working experience). Once you’ve accrued the required hours, your mentor will need to fill out your SKILLS Passport, a vital document you’ll need for the certification process.

Once your SKILLS Passport has been completed, your mentor can provide you with a “Letter of Recommendation,” which is essential for your trainer’s endorsement. With all these steps in place, you’re now ready to submit your forms and take the ADM-I Exam.

Now, I must warn you, the exam itself doesn’t directly relate to the inflatable industry. You’ll encounter questions that seemingly have no connection to our field, such as which type of fire extinguisher to use in an electrical fire. TSSA bases its standards on the ASTM International standards, leaving aspiring inflatable mechanics with little guidance or reading material for exam preparation. However, fear not! The exam consists of multiple-choice questions, and you’ll need a score of at least 75% to pass.

Once you’ve earned your ADM-I Mechanic license, congratulations are in order! You are now part of an exclusive club of inflatable mechanics in Ontario. But, the journey doesn’t end here. Your next step involves completing various forms on the TSSA website, certifying your business, inflatables, and obtaining dossiers prepared by engineers. Be prepared, however, as this certification process can be quite expensive. But remember, all this effort is geared towards allowing you to legally set up for events, potentially increasing your revenue!
